This intriguing specimen is known as a "Fairy Stone". It is a concretion consisting of fine sand and silt consolidated by calcium carbonate. It formed on the bottom of lakes of glacial origin in Northern Quebec during the Quaternary Period. The Quaternary Period spans the last 2 million years, a time dominated by a succession of ‘ice ages’. The process of glaciation, the scouring of uplands by flowing ice, and the subsequent transport of material by ice and melt water flow into lowland and offshore areas, produced distinctive sediments and landforms. These concretions formed in the silts and were carried by melt water and left in the silt of ponds, lakes and rivers in Northern Quebec Canada. As water levels rise and fall they are exposed.The Algonquin Indians called them Fairy Stones and carried them to bring them luck while hunting and fishing. Lovers gave them as gifts to their beloved. Legend says that these stones protected against evil spirits. One of the main places to find fairy stones is the Harricana River, the second longest river in Canada. As the Indians first explored the river, they found these curious round stones. They thought they looked like biscuits so named the river "Harricana" which means "river of the biscuits" in Algonquin language.These are natural formations often taking human or animal shapes. Some look like a mother cuddling a child or an inquisitive chick, while others are round discs with concentric rings or Fairy circles inside. Often one side is smooth the other bumpy, covered with raised lines and markings. These markings are fossils of tiny worms and organic debris. Each stone is a unique and amazing specimen, filled with the nurturing, grounding energy of Mother Earth herself! When you hold one of these stones, you feel at peace and a calming energy washes over you. I have one that has become a wonderful pocket companion, a gentle touchstone when a moment of calm is needed. Offered here is a sweet Earth Mother Fairy Stone.
