HISTORY

Picked on the shores of the Harricana River, Quebec, Canada, these pebbles were formed thousands years ago. They are made of fine sand and clay, solidified by nature.

The forms of these stones are a phenomenon specific to Northern Quebec, especially thoses found on the bottom of the big lakes with glacier origins. The formation of these stones is due to the retreat and melting of glaciers that once covered the territory of Abitibi.  Subsequently, the stones were carried by water for a long period of time and deposited on the shores of Northern Quebec's lakes and rivers.

The irregular lines on certain stones are traces left by miniature worms, or organic remains, which were fossilized thousands of years ago, as if the earth wanted to keep them in memory.

legend…

The ALGONQUINS called these treasures "FAIRY STONES" and often carried them as luck charms when they went on fishing or hunting expedition. The lovers offered the most beautiful "FAIRY STONES" to their loved ones.

The biggest specimens occupied a place of honor in their homes.  According to legend, these stones assured protection against bad spirits and brought good health and prosperity to the occupants of the premises.

Molded by nature, each stone is one of a kind, making them collection pieces.

These "FAIRY STONES" are at the origin of the name "HARRICANA RIVER". In fact, when the first ALGONQUINS come up the river towards Abitibi, a stop on these beaches made them realize the presence of these pebbles which for them, strangely looked like "BISCUITS". This is the reason why they named the river "HARRICANA" which means: "RIVER OF THE BISCUITS" in the ALGONQUIN language.

PERSONAL NOTE

I would also like to mention that these specimens are collected by my husband and me once a year.

When we collect these concretions, we never know what we will find.  Our expeditions are fun, exhausting and I would say addictive!  But not every expedition is successful…   Sometimes we return home empty-handed…  But when we find concretions, oh well, we forget about our backache and our scratched hands because it is worth it!  I also want to mention that our expeditions are done with an ecological conscience to protect the environment.

Of course, when we find a concretion, usually it is so covered with clay mud we don’t know what it looks like!  We bring them home, clean and dry them.  When the most beautiful Fairy Stones are selected, we apply a light protection to prevent them from scratches and enhance Mother Nature's beautiful work.
