NINETEENTH-CENTURY SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS by G.TURNER

Seller assumes all responsibility for this listing.Item specificsFormat: Hardback w/JacketSubject: Scientific instrumentsPrinting Year: 1950-NowLanguage: EnglishCondition: Used   Scientific instruments are the essential tools of the scientist, and also the material evidence of the development of science. This is the first book to deal with the vast range of instruments and apparatus made and used during the exciting years of the nineteenth century, when modern science came of age. The scientists of this age were explorers whose discoveries created a completely new environment for Western man. The fervour of invention took no account of boundaries, and reached its zenith in the great international exhibitions. Among the many new fields of scientific enquiry considered in the book are electro-magnetism, spectroscopy, polarization of light, sound synthesis and recording, high vacuum technology, and the kinetic theory of gases. The varied, intricate, and often beautiful apparatus used in research and teaching during this important period is set in its scientific and historical context, and illustrated with over 440 plates of examples from European collections and contemporary engravings. Last century's scientific instruments still exist in considerable numbers, and are readily available to collectors, both private and institutional. This book provides a unique aid to their identification, as well as providing accurate and detailed information on function and dating. It should prove invaluable to museum staff and historians, as well as to collectors and the antiques trade.
