Ex Votos: Mexican Folk Art & Miracles Ex Votos are one of the most intriguing forms of Mexican folk art. They are paintings made on tin, although there are some examples made in copper or wood. The origin of the word Ex Voto is latin and means from the solemn vow (or promise) indicating that the offering was made following a prayer to a particular Saint or in Roman times a god or goddess that is believed to have helped at the time of the miracle. When the wish is granted, the promise was made and kept that in return there would be an offering to that deity. These lovely miracle paintings are, in fact, advertisements of the power and mercy of the saints. Ex voto subjects range from common occurrences to truly dramatic events. Ex votos are hung on church walls or shrines to reinforce their owners dedication and gratitude. In Colonial times it was the Spanish who brought the custom to Mexico, and the wealthy adopted the custom. In the late 19th century, the peasants had already started to follow this same tradition. The upper classes eventually dropped the practice, however, the lower classes continue to follow the custom today. Though some ex votos are painted by the person receiving the miracle, most are produced by commissioned artists who specialized in this type of work. Most villages had at least one professional ex voto artist. The client would relate the story of the miracle to the artist who would then interpret the story with images and words. All ex votos contain a picture of the miracle, an image of the saint to whom the ex voto is dedicated, and a brief description of the miracle.Today, these charming paintings are highly valued for artistic and cultural reasons, and collected by folk art enthusiasts around the world.
