Parish's dark, scaly guitar work and raw, angular percussion create the perfect backdrop for Harvey's songpoetry. Like her hero Nick Cave (Cave's right-hand man Mick Harvey--no relation to PJ--is the only other musician credited on DANCE HALL), Harvey employs a blues sensibility more overheard than inherited as a starting point for very British tales of death and dismay. Such material might easily cross the line into pretension were it not for the solid artistic vision that informs Harvey's writing and empowers her delivery. Each song on DANCE HALL has an air of foreboding and mystery that draws the listener into a world of whispers and secrets that are simultaneously tantalizing and unsettling.Editorial reviewsRanked #44 in NME's 1996 critic's poll.NME  7 (out of 10) - ...[DANCE HALL] contains more familiar tricks--4-TRACK DEMOS' rhythmless bare-bones arrangements, RID OF ME's vocal and volume extremes, TO BRING YOU MY LOVE's ambience and basic blues progressions--than original treats...Spin  (10/01/1996)...The singer supplied sublimely spooky lyrics and estimable co-production talents to these compositions by guitarist/percussionist John Parish....The results are as engaging as they are disturbing....full of stange moves and unusual textures...Musician  (12/01/1996)3 Stars (out of 5) - ...she still has that polecat spit and those brooding rural blues, but it is a more muted affair, less immediately commercial....DANCE HALL AT LOUSE POINT is a curious beast, conveying a disparate range of moods...Q  (11/08/1996)Recommended.Melody Maker  (09/28/1996)8 (out of 10) - ...No, it's not the new PJ Harvey album, but it's far more than a mere side bar to the main story.
