The Vintage Shaving Shoppe, LLC (Professional Purveyors of Fine Tonsorial Instruments)

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) SALE!

Most of what we sell is guaranteed, described in great detail and is returnable.  Our WYSIWYG sales are the opposite.  Does this mean that the items are "junk?"  Absolutely not!  WYSIWYG items are simply products that we do not have the time to work with and want to sell quickly.  They often include items like straight razor blades, scales and other parts.  They will be of particular interest to restorers and collectors looking to restore razors with genine parts.  So without futher ado, our WYSIWYG item of the day!

OUR OFFERING TODAY: 3 Straight Razor Blades: 7/8 "Made In Germany" Hollow; 5/8 "The Artist Levering Razor" Germany Hollow; 4/8 "Wade & Butcher" Sheffield Wedge.

See the above for information on the blades in this auction.  Look at the pictures.  What you see is  what you get in this auction.  Faults may include resolved rust/corrosion, dark spots, white spots, pits, lather burn, buffing, polishing or grinding. I could make any of these blades shave ready.  Whether you can or not is up to you. With nice scales, these could be $70 knives retail, but again, that is my opinion.  No returns on these blade lots.  If you have questions, ASK before you bid.

I am, Very Truly Yours,

J. Tischler (Prop.)

Instant payment is expected for items in nearly all cases when you win one of our auctions and is always the case if you choose "Buy It Now."  Exceptions are for sellers waiting 24 hours or less to see if they win another of our auctions.  if this is the case, please email us and tell us so and we will wait for your payment.  If you wish to make other arrangements, please contact us in advance of bidding. If we do not receive payment in this time frame, we may relist the item or offer it as a “second chance” to another bidder. We also reserve the right to file an unpaid item dispute for any unpaid auctions.  We DO sell internationally, but you MUST wait until you receive an invoice from us BEFORE you pay, so that proper shipping charges may be calculated.

When you purchase one of our items, you are agreeing to all of the terms & conditions of sale displayed on this page.

You will be very, very happy with our packaging and our ship times.  Upon receiving payment for each auction, we will go the Post Office no later than two days after receipt.  We charge a flat fee of $6.50 for shipping within the continental USA and $8.50 to Canada.  This includes delivery confirmation and tracking.  Please see below for more information about shipping to other places in the world.

Insurance is available and recommended if wish to provide additional protection for your item.

FOR INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS: Our international clients (except for those in Canada) should be aware that our policy is to ship any item selling for $75 USD or more via International Registered Mail. This will result in an additional fee of $15 for the postage and additional paperwork involved.  Using this method provides protection for both buyer and seller under the PayPal Buyer & Seller Protection Policy.

We ship through the United States Postal Service and use either of two shipping methods - Priority International & First Class International. If you choose to have your item shipped using First Class International (the least expensive service) please be aware that you do so at your own risk.  While there are usually no problems, some people have been known to experience customs delays of several weeks.  Since this method provides no way of tracking your package, we cannot be held liable for any packages that arrive late, are lost or arrive damaged.  We strongly recommend Priority International shipping.

If you are an international customer, please WAIT for us to invoice you at the end of the auction for the correct shipping amount.  We recommend that you contact us before bidding for a quote on shipping.

*Free razor rehoning.  Yes gentlemen, you read correctly.  The Vintage Shaving Shoppe will cheerfully provide a coupon for ONE rehoning at any time during the life of the razor.  This is a non-transferrable offer (so if you sell the razor, this offer becomes void) and is subject to the following terms:

This service provides a rehoning ONLY of an edge that has the bevel we originally created. We will not accept razor where the edge has been chipped or corroded. Our responsibility for the razor is limited to the retail cost of a rehoning ($15).  Rarely, but it does happen, razors can get destroyed in the honing process - typically due to non-visible defects (i.e. you dropped the razor and it developed a hairline crack).Razors are typically rehoned and returned to you within two weeks.  It can take longer, depending on our workload.  In no case shall it take longer than 4 weeks to rehone your razor. Before sending in the razor for rehoning, you must send an email to assistance@thevintageshavingshoppe.com with your name and address (no PO boxes).  We will tell you how much return postage and insurance is.  You are responsible for paying this amount via PayPal in advance of submitting your razor. You agree to package your razor carefully and insure it.

This service is not time limited.  It expires only when you either sell your razor, or in the event of my death (whichever comes first.  Hopefully selling your razor will come first.)

The Vintage Shaving Shoppe, LLC. (and it's predecessor The Eccentric Collector, LLC.) has been an eBay seller since 1997.  We have always specialized in rare artifacts, primarily in coins, rare documents, stamps and edged weapons.  Utilizing our years of experience (and significant capital), we have become one of the world's largest buyers of vintage and antique wet shaving razors and related items. So if you have a collection to sell, please email us at info@vintageshavingshoppe.com

Selling rare and beautiful items is a passion for me.  Since I don’t need the money, I do it primarily for the joy of putting these items into the hands of those who will love them.  According to my wife, I spend a good deal more time and money than I should purchasing, conserving/restoring, honing and sterilizing straight razors.  While I do offer other items from time to time, straight razors and wet shaving paraphernalia are my passion.

Why Buy Your Razor From The Vintage Shaving Shoppe?

We have been eBay sellers since 1997 and have a most excellent reputation;

Our descriptions are comprehensive and accurate.  If we fail to mention something significant about the item or if we am wrong about something we claim, we will take the item back and refund your money (less S&H), no questions asked. Period.

We specialize in vintage razors and shaving accessories.  Our comprehensive intake, evaluation, conservation, restoration and sanitary procedures ensure that you receive the finest possible instrument, which is clean and shave-ready right out of the box in most cases.  Any razor that is not shave-ready will be specified as such.

Intake Procedures

We buy a lot of razors. Some can be made shave ready and some cannot (or should not, as in the case of a razor that, for one reason or another, has historic significance). The ones that cannot (about 30% of what I acquire), end up as display pieces, sources for genuine parts or are put to other good use. The rule I use is simple: if I won't put a razor to my face, I will not sell it to you to put against yours.

Of the remaining 70%, each is put in its own soft and clean basket to await the next step.

Evaluation, Conservation & Restoration

I look at straight razors as functional works of art. They were built to be shaved with - not to sit on a shelf, in a drawer or (horrors) in a box in a humid basement. So my philosophy is to determine the minimum actions required to makes each razor safe to use, pleasing to the eye and kind to the face and act accordingly. Rarely does a grinding wheel ever touch one of my razors (usually only in cases of profound damage). If it does, it will be mentioned in the auction description. If all a razor requires is a good cleaning, honing and stropping to be shave ready, that is what it gets.

Many, however, have rust, tiny nicks, are dirty or possess other defects that would make them hazardous to shave with. Even if the razor is to be used as a display piece, action often needs to be taken to "stabilize" the razor, so it does not deteriorate further. All of my razors are, even if they are simply sold as display pieces, stabilized and conserved before they are sold, using standard museum procedures for the preservation of edged weapons.

The parts of the razor most likely to be damaged are the scales (the handle). Original scales are conserved and retained whenever possible, even if they have a defect such as a chip, so long as the defect does not interfere with the safe use of the razor. If the original scales are not usable as-is, I attempt to repair them using original parts and traditional procedures. If that is not possible, I try to replace them with scales that most closely resemble the originals. In a few cases, I make new scales myself (a very time consuming procedure) using, if possible, the original handle shape.

Once a razor has been conserved/restored, it is honed. I hone using the Pyramid Method using the following progression: an 800 or 1,000 grit water stone if a bevel needs to be set; a 4,000 grit water stone; a 6,000 grit water stone; a Belgian coticule; four balsa strops with diamond paste in the following sizes: 7.5 microns, 5 microns, 2.5 microns, 1 micron; a hard wool strop pasted with chromium oxide; a linen strop; and finally a Russian leather strop.

In all, it takes me 2-10 hours to prepare a razor for your use. While this is a terrible use of my time financially, I love doing it so I ignore the labor and expense.

Sanitary Procedures

I take your safety as seriously I do my own. I once considered purchasing an autoclave, but was concerned that the intense heat would damage some of the scales (particularly the older ones). So after doing careful research on the most serious pathogens most likely to found on a sharp instrument, I decided on the following procedure: after the razor is received, rust and other dirt are carefully removed. The razor is then washed thoroughly is soap and water and then (the blade) is carefully wiped down with acetone. Later on, following conservation, restoration, honing, stropping and shave testing your razor, it is re-stropped, washed with soap and water once again and then the blade (and handle, if made of an artificial material) is left to soak in Barbicide, the industry standard for sanitizing haircutting and shaving implements) for 10 minutes.  The razor is then rinsed with clean water and daubed dry with a sterile towel.  It is then carefully coated with Renaissance Wax to seal the blade against moisture and the environment and carefully packed. No other substance is applied to the blade after it is sanitized. Sterility, of course, cannot be guaranteed, but I believe that my sanitary procedures are the finest offered in the vintage razor market. Once you receive your razor, you may clean it as you see fit (but PLEASE be careful of the edge and be mindful that any damage you cause voids your return privilege). As we are always looking to do better, I would welcome advice from any qualified professional on how we may improve our procedures.
