SUPERB ANTIQUE 4/4 VIOLIN
Extremely fine genuine Violin bearing internal label which reads:
" Jacobus Stainer in Abfam
prope Oenipontum 17++ "
Last two figures of date are hand-written and I am unable to make them out.
Obviously of some considerable age, the scroll being very finely grafted to neck indicating it is 18th century.
Length of back to lower edge is exactly 35.3 cm.
Two-piece front table of very fine grained wood. Back is constructed of two matching slabs of birds eye maple, the same wood being carried through in the ribs. The faces have inlaid purfling finishing with very fine bee stings into the corners of the C bouts.
The violin is fully blocked & lined, and the soundpost is in position.
The instrument has several very old repaired cracks to the front face, mainly to lower right corner, with one running from top edge to top of right soundhole. These repairs appear sound and secure. There are also a couple of cracks running with the grain of the wood on the left rib.
The scroll, which has been professionally grafted, is finely crafted and fitted with rosewood pegs.
Instrument is housed in a solid hard carry-case.
